I got into a conversation with a co-worker the other day about kids and cellphones. The premise was that in the case of an emergency or heaven forbid a school shooting, the kid would be able to contact home.
I countered with in the case of a school shooting the kids are supposed to be quiet as not to draw attention.
What are your thoughts? Should kids have cellphones? Should they have them in school?
If a student travels to and/or from school on their own, then they should have a cellphone on them. Other than that, I don't see a reason to use a cellphone in school.
In the case of an active shooter, the panic buttons, that the teachers in the Georgia school had, proved to be quite effective at alerting the authorities of a situation. I doubt parents could respond sooner or be more effective in such a situation. I'd push for the panic buttons to be distributed nation-wide.
